Like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the Phule couple wholeheartedly supported modern education. The submission of Jotiba Phule to the Hunter Commission in 1882 is a document which has helped in the institutionalization of primary education. Not just that! The Phule couple also worked towards encouraging English education. They believed that exposure to an international language like English can help in abolishing the caste system. It will help the Shudras and Atishudras to live a dignified life and get clerical jobs in the British administration like the Brahmins. The promotion of English education will enable social mobility and ensure economic freedom for people belonging from marginalized communities. Hence, the Phule couple advocated for English education. 

Savitribai Phule’s Advocacy for English Language 

In one of her poems titled, Learn English, Savitribai Phule encouraged Shudras and Atishudras to learn English for questioning the Brahmanical hegemony and the teachings imposed upon marginalized communities by Brahmins. She also considered English education as a tool to empower them and become culturally conscious. However, their role in establishing the English education is undermined even in the UGC-NET English Literature syllabus. However, it is our call to know and understand the contributions of the Phule couple to promote English education.
