In most MCQ formats, there are at least two options that are obviously incorrect. Start by eliminating the most obvious wrong answers. By narrowing down your choices, you can improve your odds of selecting the correct answer even if you are not so sure about it. Even if you’re guessing, reducing the number of options makes your guess more educated and likely to be correct.

• Focus on Key Terms and Concepts

Look out for key terms in both the question-and-answer options that align with the UGC-NET English Literature syllabus and concepts you have already studied. Often, UGC-NET questions are designed to test your understanding of core principles, so recognizing familiar terms can guide you toward the correct answer. 

• Don’t Overthink

Sometimes, when you face a tricky question, you are likely to overthink and second-guess yourself. However, studies have shown that your first instinct is usually the correct one. If you’re unsure of an answer, trust your initial choice unless you find a compelling reason to change it. Overthinking can lead you to select answers that you know are not correct, wasting your valuable time.

• Time Management is Key

Time management is crucial during the UGC-NET exam as you need to ensure that you don’t spend too much time on any single question. A good approach is to answer the questions you find easiest first. This will give you a quick win, build your confidence, and you will have ample time in your hands to solve the more challenging questions later. If a question is taking too long, move on to the next one and return to it later if needed.

• Answer the Easy Questions First

In the heat of the exam, it can be tempting to start with the difficult questions to get them out of the way. However, this can harm your performance by increasing stress. Instead, begin with the questions you’re confident about. This will help you build momentum and make you feel more prepared for the tougher questions.

• Be Cautious with “All of the Above” or “None of the Above”

MCQs often include the options “All of the Above” or “None of the Above,” which can be tricky. To handle these, evaluate each individual statement in the options. For “All of the Above,” ensure that all parts of the option are correct before selecting it. Similarly, “None of the Above” requires that none of the options are valid for the question, so confirm that all choices are incorrect before marking this option.

• Stay Calm and Focused

Stress can negatively impact your ability to think clearly and answer questions accurately. During the UGC-NET exam, it’s essential to stay calm and composed. If you encounter a particularly challenging question, take a deep breath and move on. Rushing or panicking will only waste your time and energy. A clear mind is key to making the right choices.

If time permits, always review your answers before submitting the exam. Sometimes, upon a second glance, you may realize you’ve misinterpreted a question or overlooked an obvious answer. Reviewing also gives you the chance to correct any small mistakes you may have made in a hurry.
