WB SET 2024 Paper Analysis: A High-Level, Unnecessarily Challenging Exam!

After looking at the WB SET exam paper, it seems that the West Bengal Commission wants only research scholars (students pursuing Ph.D. in English Literature) to qualify for the exam. Because the questions asked in the exam were of Ph.D. level. So, this means that you need to master English Literature from every aspect even before enrolling in the Ph.D. programme. This exam is one of the toughest exams that you can ever attempt. Why are we saying this? One such example is the question-based anti-plagiarism software Urkund which your libraries will probably use to check the plagiarism percentage in your thesis. Well, the plagiarism should be less than 10% to be accepted for further evaluation. Keep these things in mind. Eventually, this will help you in your Ph.D. journey. This question paper is quite futuristic in this sense. However, the Commission cannot really neglect the fact that the paper is tough for M.A. students to crack it. So, what is the purpose behind such an unnecessarily high-standard paper? I think the Commission keeps forgetting its target audience. Okay…let’s do the exam paper analysis.

What Makes the West Bengal SET Exam So Challenging?

The West Bengal SET exam is notorious for its unpredictability and high standards. This year’s paper has further cemented its reputation by:

  1. Inclusion of Complex and Uncommon Topics:
    • Students encountered literary references and works rarely covered in conventional preparation, such as writings by Edward Said, Rudyard Kipling, H.L.V. Derozio, and Thomas Gray.
    • Questions extended to niche areas like fantasy fiction, magic realism, and postmodern literature, historical fiction requiring aspirants to explore texts beyond the typical WB SET exam syllabus or UGC NET English Literature syllabus.
  2. Unfamiliar Terminology and Question Patterns:
    • New formats of questions tested not only factual knowledge but also contextual and thematic understanding of literary works.
    • Examples included analysis of courtroom scenes in literature, such as To Kill a Mockingbird and The Outsider, which required students to interpret these works’ thematic depth.
    • It seems that the Commission has completely overlooked the WB SET exam pattern. It asked questions related to Freud’s concept of Das Heimliche. This is a paper written by Sigmund Freud tackling the horrific concept of inanimate figures coming to life, severed limbs, ghosts, the image of the double figure (doppelgaengers) and lends itself to art, literature and cinema.

This also means that you need to prepare notes from multiple resources and find out something new about the renowned authors. So, preparing for WB SET exam could be challenging because even your exam preparations will require you to become a high-level researcher.

  1. Demand for Comprehensive Knowledge:
    • The West Bengal SET exam syllabus expects aspirants to connect literary movements, concepts, and authors across genres and eras. For instance, magic realism and its key proponents became crucial discussion points.
    • Works by postmodern authors like Alan Sillitoe and Arnold Wesker featured prominently, adding layers of complexity for candidates unfamiliar with contemporary literature.

These challenges underscore the need for aspirants to delve deeper into literary history and embrace a more interdisciplinary approach to preparation.

Implications of High Standards on Students

While the intention behind such rigorous exams may be to ensure quality education, it also raises serious concerns regarding fairness and accessibility:

  1. Pressure on Ordinary Students

The sheer difficulty of the West Bengal SET exam places immense pressure on students who cannot afford the best WB SET exam preparation online coaching fees. Unlike their peers, many aspirants from economically weaker sections face challenges such as limited study materials, inadequate guidance, and resource constraints.

  1. Inequity in Education

The rising reliance on coaching classes has inadvertently created a divide. Students who can afford expensive preparation resources gain an edge, while others struggle to keep up. This trend contradicts the principles of fair competition and inclusive education.

  1. Discouragement and Academic Burnout

For many students, the unpredictability and heightened difficulty of the exam can be demoralizing. Instead of fostering a love for literature and critical thinking, the focus often shifts to mere survival strategies for passing the exam.

  1. Shift Away from Genuine Learning

The need to tackle such challenging exams has led students to prioritize exam-oriented preparation over a deeper, more genuine understanding of literature. This undermines the true purpose of education.

Insights for Exam Preparation: Adapting to the Challenges

Despite its challenges, success in the West Bengal SET is achievable with a strategic and informed approach:

  1. Diversify Your Reading
  • Go beyond the syllabus and explore texts related to postcolonial studies, fantasy fiction, magic realism, and postmodern literature.
  • Study both canonical and lesser-known authors like Edward Said, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Gray, and H.L.V. Derozio to build a comprehensive foundation.
  1. Focus on Contextual Understanding
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of literary themes, movements, and contexts.
  • Analyze works such as To Kill a Mockingbird and The Outsider to understand courtroom literature and its thematic implications.
  1. Prepare for the Unpredictable
  • Stay updated with shifts in WB SET exam pattern and emerging trends in literature studies.
  • Practice answering high-level, analytical questions to build confidence.
  1. Connect Literary Concepts
  • Integrate concepts across different genres and periods. For example, explore how magic realism combines magical elements with realistic narratives and its influence on modern literature.
  • Relate literary concepts to real-world themes and movements to enhance your interpretive skills.
  1. Seek Reliable Guidance
  • Enroll in the best online coaching classes for WB SET for structured study plans, mock tests, and personalized guidance.
