What is BPSC exam?
BPSC is a state-level exam that recruits candidates like you for various administrative roles in the Bihar government. If you’re dreaming of becoming an officer in Bihar’s civil services, then you can apply for posts like Deputy Collector, DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police), and other high-ranking positions.
Why is the BPSC Exam So Popular?
The BPSC Exam opens doors to some of the most respected jobs in the Bihar government. BPSC Exam Pattern
Before you begin exam preparations for BPSC exam, you should know about the BPSC exam pattern.
BPSC Preliminary Exam
The BPSC Preliminary Exam will be conducted in an offline mode consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions. You can get to know the marking scheme, type of questions, and exam duration for the prelim’s exam here below.

Total Marks:- 150
Total Duration:- 2 hours (120 minutes)
Marks for Correct Answer:- +1
Marks for Incorrect Answer:- 1/3
BPSC Mains Exam
If you clear the prelims, you move on to the BPSC mains exam, which is more detailed and consists of four papers: General Hindi, General Studies Paper 1, General Studies Paper 2, and one optional subject (English Literature).
The mains examination is a descriptive-type test and is conducted for different papers, each for 3 hours. The General Hindi paper will be of 100 marks. The General Studies Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be of 300 marks each. If you select English Literature as your optional, then you need to attempt a paper of 300 marks.
BPSC Interview Process
Finally, if you do well in the mains, you’ll be called for a personality test, which is an interview to assess your suitability for administrative roles.
BPSC Salary
After passing the BPSC selection process, you will be hired for different administrative and executive levels. After getting hired, the employees of BPSC receive a monthly pay scale as per the post.
For Level 9 posts which includes Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and Commissioner of State Tax, you will be paid Rs. 61,500/- to Rs. 72,000/-. For Level 7 posts (Rural Development Officer, Revenue Officer, Supply Inspector, Block SC & ST Welfare Officer), you will receive Rs. 59,857/- to Rs. 68,795/-.
BPSC Syllabus
The BPSC syllabus covers the aspects of General Science, Polity, Economy, History and the National Movement. Before starting your BPSC exam preparations, study the BPSC syllabus thoroughly.
General Science (General understanding of science, including matters of everyday observation and experience). The questions on Science and Tech will be such that they do not require subject specialization.
Current Affairs of National/International Importance
History of India and Bihar (General understanding of the subject with the broad aspects of the history of Bihar)
Geography of India and Bihar (Questions will relate to the physical, social and economic geography of the country including the main features of Indian agricultural and natural resources)
General geography and geographical division of Bihar and its major river systems
Indian Polity (Questions will test knowledge on the country’s political system, Panchayati raj, community development and planning in India and Bihar)
Indian economy and economy of Bihar post-independence
Indian Movements and Contribution of Bihar in it (Questions will relate to the nature and character of the 19th century resurgence, growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence with special reference to Bihar)
Under Indian Economy and Polity, the questions will cover the following topics:
- Indian Political System
- Panchayati Raj
- Community Development
- Planning in India and Bihar
Under the Indian National Movement, you need to cover the resurgence in the 19th century, the nature and growth of nationalism in India, and India’s independence. Also, the role of Bihar in the Indian National Movement is important from the BPSC exam point of view
Questions based on General Mental Ability
BPSC syllabus for Mains
The BPSC syllabus for Mains consists of 4 papers.
- Qualifying Paper: General Hindi
The paper of General Hindi will be qualifying in nature. The syllabus for the qualifying paper is of the level as that of the Bihar School Education Board (BSEB). The paper will be of 100 marks and subjective in nature, and the distribution of the marks is as follows:
Essay: 30 Marks
Grammar: 30 Marks
Syntax: 25 Marks
Summarisation: 15 Marks
Out of the 100 marks, candidates are required to secure the qualifying marks in the paper. For this qualifying paper, you should read good Hindi books of schools.
Syllabus of GS Paper 1
The BPSC syllabus would cover topics related to Modern History of India and Indian culture (History of the country with special reference to Bihar in the middle of 19th century, the introduction and expansion of western and technical education, Bihar’s role in the Indian freedom struggle, the Santhal Uprising in Bihar, Birsa movement, Champaran Satyagraha, the Quit India Movement, chief features of Mauryan and Pal art, Patna Qulam painting, Roles of Gandhi, Tagore and Nehru)

- 1857 war of independence

Along with this, there will be questions related to statistical analysis, graphs and diagrams (Questions to test the ability to draw conclusions from statistical, graphical or diagrammatical information and to point out deficiencies, limitations or inconsistencies).
Syllabus for GS Paper 2
The BPSC syllabus covers topics related to:
- Indian Polity (Questions based on the political system in India including Bihar)
- Indian economy and Geography of India (Questions on planning in India and the physical, economic and social geography of India and Bihar)
- The role and impact of science and technology in the development of India (Questions to test awareness of the role and impact of science and technology in India and Bihar with special reference to applied science.
Syllabus for Optional (English Literature)
In the BPSC Mains exam, you need to select your optional subject (English Literature). Here, you will get high-level questions from Honours level. You need to focus on literature from 1798 to 1900 and read majors authors like, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats, Lamb, Dickens, Tennyson, Browning, Eliot, Ruskin, and Peter. In Section II, you will have to follow works of Shakespeare, Milton, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy, W.B. Yeats, and D.H. Lawrence.
