What is WB SET 2024? Know WB SET Exam Syllabus, Eligibility Criteria & Exam Pattern

What is WB SET?

The WB SET exam evaluates the eligibility of candidates for the role of Assistant Professor in various disciplines, including English, History, Political Science, and more only in West Bengal. The exam is aligned with the guidelines set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is designed to ensure that only qualified individuals enter the academic profession. The State Eligibility Test (SET) will be conducted by the West Bengal College Service Commission (WBCSC) in 33 subjects at select test centres.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. You can apply for WB SET exam for English if you have completed/are studying in a final year of a UGC specified Master’s degree in English.
  2. The candidates having Post Graduate diploma/certificate awarded by Indian University/Institute or Foreign degree/diploma/certificate awarded by the Foreign University/Institute should in their own interest, ascertain the equivalence of their diploma/degree/certificate, with Master’s degree of recognized Indian Universities from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
  3. If you have secured 55% in Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC, then you’re eligible for WB SET exam 2024. Additionally, if you belong to any reserved category, you should at least secure 50% in your post-graduation for meeting the WB SET exam 2024 eligibility criteria.
  4. If you are currently pursuing your Master’s degree or have appeared for your final year exams and are awaiting results, you can still apply for the WB SET exam. You’ll be admitted provisionally, and your eligibility for the Assistant Professor position will be confirmed once you’ve completed your Master’s with at least 55% marks (50% for SEBC (non-creamy layer), SC, ST, PwD, and Third gender candidates). You must obtain your degree within two years of the GSET result declaration, or you will be disqualified.
  5. If you belong to third gender, then you will get same relaxation in fee, age and qualifying criteria for WB SET as the SC/ST categories.
  6. If you hold a Ph.D. and completed your Master’s by September 19, 1991, you are eligible for a 5% relaxation in aggregate marks (from 55% to 50%) for the WB SET exam.
  7. There is no upper age limit to apply for the GSET exam 2024.

WB SET Examination Fee and Mode of Payment

The WBCSC has set Rs 1,300 for WB SET General, Rs. 650 for OBC/EWS, and Rs. 325 for SC/ST/PWD/Transgender candidates for filling up the application form for the WB SET exam 2024.

    WB SET Exam Pattern

    The WB SET exam pattern will include two papers and both the papers will have objective-type questions. The Paper 1 of the WB SET will be of 100 marks in which you need to answer 50 questions compulsorily for an hour from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. The Paper II will contain 100 questions and take place from 12 noon to 2:00 pm. Each question will carry two marks. The WB SET exam for Paper I will focus on assessing the teaching and research aptitude. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate.

     

     

    The WB SET Paper II exam will cover entire syllabus of English Literature. You will have to mark the responses for questions of Paper – I and Paper – II on the OMR Sheet provided along with the test booklet.

    WB SET Exam Syllabus

    The WB SET exam syllabus for Paper I covers 10 modules. Five questions from each module will be asked from the WB SET exam syllabus for Paper I, carrying two marks each.

    Unit-I Teaching Aptitude

    • Teaching: Concept, Objectives, Levels of teaching (Memory, Understanding

    and Reflective), Characteristics and basic requirements.

    • Learner’s characteristics: Characteristics of adolescent and adult learners

    (Academic, Social, Emotional and Cognitive), Individual differences.

    • Factors affecting teaching related to: Teacher, Learner, Support material,
    • Instructional facilities, Learning environment and Institution.

    • Teaching Support System: Traditional, Modern and ICT based.

    Unit-II Research Aptitude

    • Research: Meaning, Types, and Characteristics, Positivism and Postpositivistic approach to research

    • Thesis and Article writing: Format and styles of referencing

    • A passage of text be given. Questions be asked from the passage to be answered.

    Unit-IV Communication

    • Mass-Media and Society

    Unit-V Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude

    • Types of reasoning.
    • Number series, Letter series, Codes and Relationships.
    • Mathematical Aptitude (Fraction, Time & Distance, Ratio, Proportion and Percentage, Profit and Loss, Interest and Discounting, Averages etc.).

    Unit-VI Logical Reasoning

    • Understanding the structure of arguments: argument forms, structure of categorical propositions, Mood and Figure, Formal and Informal fallacies, Uses of language, Connotations and denotations of terms, Classical square of opposition
    • Evaluating and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning
    • Analogies
    • Venn diagram: Simple and multiple use for establishing validity of arguments
    • Indian Logic: Means of knowledge
    • Pramanas: Pratyaksha (Perception), Anumana (Inference), Upamana (Comparison), Shabda (Verbal testimony), Arthapatti (Implication) and Anupalabddhi (Non-apprehension).
