Hello peeps, we have curated this wonderful blog for your special reading section on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2025. We hope that you would cherish this piece for a lifetime or so. On this day, I appreciate how every sexuality firmly upholds the feminine aspect of their nature. We have always talked about women’s oppression because we forgot that there is a tangible feminine aspect even in those who are merely seen as oppressors. Yes, there is always a number or two cited in evidence what a female sex endures throughout their lives, but we must not overlook the burden of masculinities. A special thank you note to all the men who have supported us in all endeavours. This note is not meant to suppress the atrocities women are facing worldwide but it is a note for all those men who still fight back tyrannies and uphold the feminine within. This special note is not myopic of women’s history and their struggles. But it is about appreciating co-existence. As women, we are often questioning our purpose in existence. Holy Havoc! None of us know the exact purpose of our lives. But there are some feminist authors who have tried to figure it out in their literary works. Let’s explore the top 10 feminist writers in English literature you must definitely read! Moreover, these feminist writers are important from the UGC-NET English Literature syllabus’s perspective. Never miss out on a chance to understand the literature in a better manner.
Top 10 feminist writers in English Literature
Welcome to the colourful world of English Literature. You have well-curated volumes, theories, concepts, and beautiful minds narrating their stories, sometimes in fiction, in poetry, in non-fiction, in autobiographies, and so on… Truly, literature is a great subject if you want to learn to think about the world surrounding you in a million views. Now, let us talk about distinguished contributions of our feminist writers from different parts of the world:
- Mary Wollstonecraft: Known as the first feminist author in the modern period. She is best known for her work A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), in which she argued that women should receive the same education as men and be treated as rational beings. Wollstonecraft challenged the patriarchal norms of her time and laid the foundation for modern feminism.
She was also known for her personal life, including her relationship with political philosopher William Godwin and as the mother of Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. Despite her early death at the age of 38, Wollstonecraft’s ideas have continued to influence feminist thought and gender equality movements.
- Virgina Woolf: Another modernist feminist writer who is known for her work A Room of One’s Own (1929). She was the maestro of all women writers who guided us to write fearlessly and own our space, which was quite a radical idea. She clearly stated: “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” She is also known for other literary contributions like To the Lighthouse (1927), Orlando (1928), The Waves (1931) and Mrs. Dalloway (1925). Most of her works were experimental where she explored consciousness, gender, and society. She was also a part of the famous Bloomsbury group.
- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Another profound Nigerian feminist writer who is known for her brilliant writings on racism, civil war, political issues, immigration issues, cultural differences, and love. Adichie’s novel “Americanah”, published in 2013, is a story about a girl’s journey from her home in Nigeria to the United States of America. The book narrates the experiences of a young girl, struggling with her identity and the will to survive. Not just! She wrote Purple Hibiscus (2003), Half of a Yellow Sun (2006), The Thing Around Your Neck (2009), We Should All Be Feminists (2014), and Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions (2017). Adichie is celebrated for her engaging prose, sharp social commentary, and fearless discussions on feminism and race. Her TED Talk “We Should All Be Feminists” has significantly influenced contemporary feminist discourse, even inspiring a song by Beyoncé.
- bell hooks: A lovely soul who was known for her empathetic nature and fighting for including black women’s lives throughout her life. She was a cultural feminist. She used lowercase letters for her pen name to emphasize the importance of her ideas over her identity. She literally claimed “personal is political.” Gloria Jean Watkins aka bell hooks wrote Ain’t I a Woman? Black Women and Feminism (1981), Talking Back: Thinking Feminist, Thinking Black (1989), All About Love: New Visions (2000), Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center (1984), and Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom (1994).
- Arundhati Roy: The bold author of The God of Small Things is also known for politically charged opinions. She has defended not just human rights but also fought for environmental issues. We can call her an eco-feminist. She won the Booker Prize in 1997 for her debut novel The God of Small Things. She has contributed to English Literature substantially. She also wrote The Ministry of Utmost Happiness (2017), Field Notes on Democracy: Listening to Grasshoppers (2009), Capitalism: A Ghost Story (2014), and Azadi: Freedom. Fascism. Fiction. (2020).
- Toni Morrison: Another profound Pulitzer awardee is popularly known for her work Beloved. She is known for her powerful storytelling, lyrical prose, and deep exploration of Black identity, history, and trauma. She was the first black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993. Some of her notable works include, The Bluest Eye (1970), Sula (1973), Song of Solomon (1977), Beloved (1987), Jazz (1992), Paradise (1997), A Mercy (2008), and Home (2012).
- Taslima Nasreen: Taslima Nasreen is a Bangladeshi-Swedish writer, physician, feminist, secular humanist and human rights activist. Some of her most popular books include, “Lajja”(Shame), “French Lover” and “Revenge”, all of which centres around the themes of women oppression and criticism of religion. Her most recent book “My Girlhood” will release in March, 2020, which is set against the backdrop of the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.
- Jhumpa Lahiri: Jhumpa Lahiri is an acclaimed American author of Indian descent, best known for her explorations of identity, immigration, and the experiences of the South Asian diaspora. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her debut short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies (1999), and has since gained recognition for her elegant prose and deeply introspective storytelling. Her notable works include: The Namesake (2003), The Lowland (2013), Whereabouts (2018, in Italian; 2021, in English), In Other Words (In Altre Parole) (2015), and Translating Myself and Others (2022).
- Shulamith Firestone: She was a radical feminist, writer, and activist best known for her influential book The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution (1970). She was a key figure in the second-wave feminist movement, advocating for the complete liberation of women through technological and social revolution.
- Adrienne Rich: She is considered one of the most influential American poets, essayists, and feminist theorists of the 20th century. Her work explores themes of feminism, lesbian identity, political activism, and social justice. Some of her notable works include: Diving into the Wreck (1973), Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law (1963), The Dream of a Common Language (1978), An Atlas of the Difficult World (1991), Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution (1976), and Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence (1980).
